Meta replaces values like {{campaign.name}} with your real names only when the link is used in an ad. Nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere.

    How It Works

    What Are UTM Parameters?

UTM parameters are short tags added to the end of a link. When someone clicks your ad, analytics tools such as Google Analytics read these tags to show exactly which source, campaign and ad brought the visitor. Without them, much of your paid social traffic can be hard to tell apart from other visits.

    Meta Dynamic URL Parameters

Instead of typing a campaign or ad name by hand, you can use dynamic values. Meta replaces them with the real names when your ad is delivered, so one setup works for every ad.

    • {{campaign.name}} and {{campaign.id}}: the campaign the ad belongs to.
    • {{adset.name}} and {{adset.id}}: the ad set.
    • {{ad.name}} and {{ad.id}}: the individual ad.
    • {{placement}}: where the ad was shown, such as Feed or Stories.
    • {{site_source_name}}: the platform, shown as a short code for Facebook, Instagram, Messenger or Audience Network.

Where to Add UTM Parameters in Meta Ads

When creating or editing an ad in Ads Manager, look for the URL parameters field in the ad's tracking section. Paste the "URL parameters only" result there and keep your normal website URL in the destination field. Meta then adds the parameters to every click automatically.

    UTM Best Practices

    • Always use lowercase, because UTM values are case-sensitive.
    • Use underscores or hyphens instead of spaces.
    • Keep naming consistent across all your campaigns.
    • Use UTM links only in ads and external posts, never on links between pages of your own website.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do UTM parameters affect ad approval or performance?

No. UTM parameters only add tracking information to your link. They do not change how Meta reviews or delivers your ads.

Why do I see {{campaign.name}} in my reports?

Dynamic values only work inside Meta ads. If you use the same link in a normal post, email or bio, Meta cannot replace them. Use fixed values for those links instead.

    Should I use utm_source=facebook or {{site_source_name}}?

Both work. A fixed "facebook" is simple and readable. {{site_source_name}} tells you whether the click came from Facebook, Instagram, Messenger or Audience Network, which is more useful for ads that run across placements.

    Is my information saved?

No. Links are built in your browser and are not saved or sent anywhere.
