What Is a Business Manager Admin?

A Business Manager admin is a person with full control over a Business Manager. Admins can add or remove people, connect or remove Pages and ad accounts, change payment methods and manage partners. In short, they hold the keys to every asset inside.

When you create a Business Manager, your personal profile automatically becomes its first admin. Many businesses never add anyone else, which means the whole business depends on a single profile.

Admins log in with personal profiles

There's no separate "business login" for Meta. Every admin uses their own personal Facebook profile to access the Business Manager. That's why the security of those personal profiles is the security of your business.

How Many Admins Should a Business Manager Have?

The safest setup is at least two admins, and usually no more than a few. Each one should be a real person you trust, using their own profile.

Why one admin is risky

If your only admin profile gets locked, restricted or hacked, there may be nobody left who can manage the Business Manager, remove a bad actor or contact support from inside it. A second admin can keep things running while the problem is solved.

Why too many admins is also risky

Every extra admin is another profile that could be compromised. If people only need to run ads or reply to messages, they don't need full control. Give them limited access instead.

Admin Roles and Permissions

Business Manager lets you choose between full control and limited access for each person, and you can give access asset by asset. Meta renames these roles from time to time, but the rule stays simple: give each person only what their job needs.

• Full control: for owners and one trusted backup admin. They can manage people, assets, payments and settings.
• Limited access: for team members who run ads, create content or reply to messages, on the specific assets they work with.
• Partner access: for agencies and outside businesses, given through their own Business Manager rather than their staff's profiles.

What Makes a Strong Admin Profile

An admin profile carries more responsibility than an everyday profile. It should meet a higher standard:

1. A real, consistent identity: a real name and details that match the person who uses it.
2. Two-factor authentication: ideally through an authenticator app, with recovery codes stored safely.
3. Current recovery details: an email and phone number the admin can actually access today.
4. Clean login history: no unknown sessions, no shared logins and no frequent location jumps.
5. Only necessary apps: old third-party apps with access removed.

What Happens When an Admin Profile Is Restricted or Hacked

Because admins control everything, a problem with one admin profile can quickly become a problem for the whole Business Manager.

If an admin profile is hacked

Whoever takes over the profile may get full control of your Business Manager. They could remove other admins, change payment methods or run ads. A second, secure admin can remove the compromised profile quickly and limit the damage.

If an admin profile is restricted

A restricted admin may lose access to the Business Manager and its ad accounts. In some cases, Meta may also review the Business Manager connected to that profile. Another admin can keep the business running while the restricted profile goes through Meta's review.

No setup can promise an admin profile will never be restricted or targeted. A strong profile and a backup admin make problems much easier to recover from.

Agencies, Freelancers and Admin Access

It's common for a business to make its agency or freelancer an admin "to make things easier." It's also one of the riskiest setups, because your Business Manager then depends on the security of someone else's personal profile.
